This movie has incredible jaw-dropping horror. Chock-full of lore and a looming presence of dread this the best horror movie I`ve seen in my life. For the first time in years I was afraid of the dark that night. This movie reminds us of what real, genuine fear is by portraying a very realistic and flawed family and how they cope with loss. I genuinely felt my heart pounding harder than it has from watching a movie and my friend almost had to leave the theater from a panic attack. It adapts tropes from countless other horror films then subverts them like a magician with a huge bag full of tricks. I just watched it a second time and scanned all over every shot to see if I might have missed something. People who complain about its run-time, as if that goes against the film, should reconsider film because art doesn`t have to be constrained to a cookie-cutter rubric. People who say this film lacks jumpscares are desensitized to them. There definitely are jumpscares in here except instead of resorting to to cheap, startling, non-contextual "BOO" moments there are uncomfortable scenes of imminent death making me feel like open prey about to be attacked. Most modern horror films are like fried foods, fast to make and a quick bite to eat on the go whereas a film of this caliber is like smoked bbq, it took a long time to make but once you finally get to eat it it`s one of the most heavenly experiences possible; 10/10

As the director of the highest class, Guillermo del Toro showed himself at the beginning of his career when he happened to put a charming Chronos and truly frightening "Mutants", which allowed the Mexican master to gain a foothold on American soil and continue further creative research. Each film del Toro, whether it be frightening mysticism, horror or screen adaptation of a graphic novella, has a powerful emotional charge, profound reasoning and breaking any barriers by the power of love, to which the director has a special relationship. The worst film you`ll watch in 2019. Got sucked in by the great cast. Some of the worst "Horror" I`ve witnessed, completely unimaginative. I feel like Tori Spelling should have been in this....

The producer of this The Conjuring franchise (2013-2018: total 5 films), James Wan who is well know for SAW franchise (2004-2017; total 8 films) is no doubt that the best horror filmmaker in the present film industries. You can find the image of The Nun is extremely similar to Mr. Barlow in The Salem`s Lot (1979). The Nun is un doubted that it imitated Mr. Barlow`s monster image. However, this film overly used jump scary tricks throughout the entire film with heavy sound effects which cause head ache among audiences. Moreover, the script logic is problematic that when Father Burke and Sister Irene investigate the Romanian ancient Carta Monastery, the first encounter with the Abbess and easy acceptance of stay at the attached convent is too careless, and unusual when Frenchie who was a food supplier to the nuns said the place has been cursed and no body close the territory. Its plotting sloppiness itself is a miracle to link not logically gathered pieces of sequences that follow. Especially Father Burke and Sister Irene blindly believe and treat the dead nuns as live people is another miracle narrative fabrication. Audience is hard to be persuaded in this logical failure. Besides these, other fatal logical failure is that additional inserted episode of failed exorcism on Daniel, by this episode, the director Corin Hardy tried to make comparison and linkage with Father Lankester Merrin of The Exorcist (1973), or Father Morning of The Exorcist III (1990). On the contrary, the exorcism of Valak / The Nun is unexpectedly not fully engaged between Father Burke and Valak / The Nun. For jumping scare, this trick is from The Ju-On (2004: US). And it`s heavily used to scare audiences. This is directorial sin in this film. However, you have to mention that there are truly scary spooky atmosphere, well crafted Gothic art solutions, acting is also realistic, no sloppy acting. Furthermore, Dracula-like story setting in Romania with minimal characters involved is something cinematic and make audiences to expect horrific Gothic horror taste of this film. The true horror film principle is described by Christopher Lee, `Don`t show a monster too many times. It should be kept in minimal. True horror is that something makes you scare to open the door psychologically, e.g. The Haunting (1963). Sean S. Cunningum also mentioned the minimalist theory of horror filmmaking. Moreover, he referred the solution of JAWS(1975) is its example. In The Nun (2018), the best solution is when Father Burke feels Valak watching their arrival to the monastery and it shows a quick short cutaway of Valak leaving from the window. Castle of Dracula? It`s Carta Monastery. Although there are actual advantages of this film in art dimensions, this is a religious/ Catholic propaganda film, and every thing the protagonists should do is pray, pray and pray......And the Catholic warriors` massacre is justified through this religious propaganda. And the blood of Jesus is a science fictional device to end Valak. The Nuns pray for The Nun, pray for the box office hit. Just only pray for God to save themselves.

I`m by-passing the "supernatural" element of the film. Okay, you (we all) know it before go to the cinema, we know what to watch. It`s like you don`t like StarWars because they have Jedi abilities & light-sabres (you knew it before)... ...The problem is the horrible plot/scenario... and the super-bad screen-play. We have a small group of survived "101" US Paras during the night before "D-Day" (June 6 1944), which they trying to take out (destroy) a "building" (no further details from the movie!!!) that is important for the air-bombing success! (If you understood something, let me know! "An important building against the allies` air-strike"... Totally childish. Not even a special weapon`s artillery battery, that would make A PERFECT SENSE to the plot). So, after the plain crash, a small group of survivors trying to continue the mission, while a battalion of Nazis is all around the area, but the survivors don`t have problem to... argue in the middle of the silent woods (and no Nazi running towards that noise), stepping on land mine (and no Nazi running to see why a mine explode, while enemy planes with paras are flying over their heads!), etc. The American troops arrived to a French village FULL OF GERMAN PATROLS (I counted over 20-30 troops patrolling the village streets), but the brave Americans made it to find refuge into a French house... the Nazis didn`t arrested them... but THEY DID ARRESTED the French house`s owner (a French girl)!!!!!! The Germans SPOTTED the ...girl, but not the 5-6 full-armed (and NOISY) American Paratroopers! Then, after a while (and when Nazis let free the girl), a German SS Major arrives to the girl`s house, obviously for sexual reasons (wanted to rape her). The Americans ATTACKED HIM... was a FIGHT between them... EVEN SHOTS (!!!)... but no German arrived to the house they left their commander!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...After a while and when the US Corporal send a trooper for... scouting (in the full of Nazis village`s streets!!!!), the trooper ENTERED into a German truck and he... entered that way into the SUPER-DUPER ULTRA GUARDED facility (that wanted to destroy), he managed to go to the DEEPEST LEVEL of the facility and saw all what were happening there... and he DID IT OUT, ESCAPED, to give report back!!!!!!!!!! ...Okay, I give up. Like I wrote... not even a 5 years old wouldn`t write a SO RIDICULOUS script! Except the uniforms, the landscape, the screens - that looks SO PERFECTLY like France of 1944... everything else of this movie is horrible!
